Free Culture Irregularly
From Indeks 73 Initiative team:
Censorship has not disappeared after 1989; it has only changed its forms. Its corset is still restraining creative imagination and marginalises inconvenient issues. Indeks 73 was initiated to fight such attitudes. We want to defend freedom of creation and free access to culture, which are our rights guaranteed in the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. Our initiative was born because we object to more and more frequent cases of censorship in Polish art in recent years, motivated by religious, social and ideological reasons. We are convinced that freedom of artistic expression in the civil society is as important as freedom of speech, or even more. Because art is able to show us the truths which are not discussed in public in Poland. Our Free Culture Irregularly will deal with the problem of restraints on artistic freedom and access to culture in Poland. Do private galleries give more freedom to artists? What's the reason of censoring sexual expression? Who replaced the communist censors from Mysia street? What is free culture? You'll read about it all in the first issue, opening the activities season of Indeks 73, www.indeks73.pl The Archives of Censorship in Polish contemporary art after 1989 Over 90 documented cases of censorship interventions, denunciation, pressure and threats since the beginning of the 90s until now. dalej Roman Pawłowski Censorship. Reactivation. Since 1989 we have lived in a naïve conviction that Poland is a country complying with freedom of speech and artistic expression regulations. Yet, we've been deluding ourselves. dalej Iza Kowalczyk Between the free market and the dogma. Art in double bonds. It is not true that the free market leads to more freedom of artistic expression. It's just the opposite: the bonds of old-fashioned morality are replaced with the urge of consumption. dalej Ewa Majewska A teenager's belly piercing: About fetishization of children's sexuality in the censorship legislator's eyes. Will restrictions on regulations concerning pornography issues truly solve the problem of sexual abuse of children and teenagers? dalej Jarosław Lipszyc Free Culture Waiting for the article. dalej Lidia Makowska About Indeks 73 Initiative Why do we defend freedom of artistic creation? Why do we want to rebuild the public domain and free access to cultural goods? What's our structure, methods and goals? dalej
